How true! Vintage has something unique about it, an air of the bygone eras, a history that comes with some captivating story. A story that draws everyone to it…
It is this lingering feel of the bygone period that makes vintage clothing online exclusive to some.
Vintage clothing! Clothes that are more than 20 years old. They bring with them the essence, fabric, style, and fashion of that era. Obviously, vintage clothes can be in demand at any time even in contemporary times. Fashion also has history and history tends to repeat itself.
Vintage clothes that are more than 50 years old are mostly handmade, the ones nearer to this century may have been made by machines. Here are a few examples of the vintage clothes:
1920s, in 1920 came the flapper dresses, necklaces that were worn in long beads and wearing T strap shoes was the most fashionable thing in the world.
1930s, Bolero jackets were the craze. Both men and women wore clothes that had puffed sleeves. Footwear was mostly peep- toe shoes.
1940s, An era that saw wool plaid skirts and animal print handbags and footwear. Platform heel was in vogue and so were the brooches.
1950s, this period saw women in long skirts and petticoats, women also preferred to wear shirtwaist dresses. No woman, who professed to be fashionable, stepped out of the house without her string of pearls. And, of course, the very chic Wayfarer sunglasses were worn by every fashionista.
1960s, everything that Jackie Kennedy wore was fashion. Her shoes, her clothes, her hair style—everything was copied shamelessly by the women of the classes and the masses. An era of bell- bottoms and hippie like clothes.
1970s, Platform heels came back, so did block heels. Flare jeans replaced the bell- bottoms and boots were considered stylish.
1980s, clothes were kind of gaudy, gold chains and gold rings were the favourite accessories and blades with shoulder pads were considered epic.
1990s, Gone were the long gold chains, these were replaced by throat hugging chokers. Baggy shirts and leggings became the choice of the fashionable people.
So, now that you’re clear about what’s vintage clothing, let me show you what to keep in mind when buying a vintage piece.
- Do not go overboard with vintage. Be as minimal as possible, that’ll make you stand out and look classy. Girlies, you want to be copied not mimicked, right?
- Some of the vintage clothes are large; don’t settle for the large size. You know how we end up putting on inches, if we wear loose clothes, don’t
- If you do like the large sized cloth too much then get it fitted to your size. It should be absolutely in proportion to your size.
- A knitted cloth can be hand washed to make it a size smaller.
- It will be surprising if the vintage clothes come without tiny holes. To check, just hold up the cloth in front of the light and you’ll those tiny holes that each have a story to tell. Girlies, don’t get hyper about it, there are reweavers, who will put your cloth together beautifully. Of course, they come with a cost, (which mind you is not very pocket friendly) but if you can invest in vintage clothing, you’ve got to invest in reweavers too.
- Don’t buy stuff that’s falling apart, like weak fabric or embroidery coming off and other such stuff. But then if have fallen in love with the piece, make sure that it comes at a low price. I mean you cannot be stupid over a piece of a vintage cloth, now can you?
- Obviously, an old cloth will not smell fresh. Your dry cleaner will have a perfect solution to it and will deodorize it to make it sweet smelling.
- If there are stains on the cloth, leave it. Don’t delude yourself that the stains can come off, they won’t.
- Armpits! Check the armpits of the garment thoroughly. That’s where the trouble lies.
